Steven Paul Fenwick, born on July 23, 1951, in Caerphilly, Wales, is a former dual-code rugby player who excelled in both rugby union and rugby league during the 1970s and 1980s. Known for his skill as a center, Fenwick represented Wales in both formats of the game, earning a reputation as a versatile and reliable player.

Rugby Union Career

Fenwick began his rugby journey at Caerphilly Grammar Technical School before joining Taffs Well RFC. In 1971, he moved to Beddau RFC, where he played 51 games, and later transitioned to the first-class team Bridgend RFC in 1973. His career highlights include:

  • Wales National Team (1975–1981): Fenwick earned 30 caps for Wales, scoring 152 points. He debuted against France in 1975, scoring a try within five minutes and amassing nine points in the game.
  • British Lions Tour (1977): He was a key member of the British Lions team during their tour of New Zealand, playing in all four Tests and scoring two tries, one conversion, and three penalties during the tour.
  • Captaincy: Fenwick captained Wales during the Centenary match against the All Blacks in 1980.
  • World XV: Played for a World XV team against Argentina in Buenos Aires on August 9, 1980.

Rugby League Career

In August 1981, Fenwick switched to professional rugby league, joining the Cardiff City Blue Dragons. Highlights of his league career include:

  • Club Career (1981–1984): Fenwick played 85 games for the Cardiff City Blue Dragons, scoring 18 tries, 212 goals, and two field goals for a total of 480 points. He debuted against Salford, where he scored four goals.

  • Relocation of Cardiff Blue Dragons: Before the 1984/85 season, the team relocated to Bridgend and was renamed the Bridgend Blue Dragons.
